WHAT ARE YOU HUNGRY FOR?
Jesus describes a kind of happiness the world cannot manufacture. The word makarios carries the sense of being blessed, fortunate, and favored. But this blessed life begins with an appetite: a deep hunger and thirst for righteousness.
Physical hunger eventually demands our attention. Thirst can become urgent. Jesus uses those powerful cravings to show us what our desire for God should become. Righteousness is not merely looking religious; it is wanting our lives to receive God’s approval – wanting our choices, motives, relationships, and worship to be right in His eyes.
The question is not whether hunger is something we all experience. The question is what we are trying to use to satisfy that hunger. When our deepest appetite becomes God Himself, Jesus gives a promise: we will be filled.
- What has occupied most of my desire and attention lately?
- Where do I most need God’s approval to matter more than people’s approval?
- What would it look like to pursue righteousness with real urgency today?
Father, awaken a deeper hunger in me for what is right in Your eyes. Reorder my desires. Let me want Your presence, Your ways, and Your approval more than temporary satisfaction. Fill me as I pursue You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Before making one significant decision today, ask: “Lord, what would please You?”
THE APPROVAL THAT MATTERS
Cain and Abel both brought offerings, but Scripture emphasizes that the Lord looked with favor on Abel and his offering. God then confronted Cain with a revealing question: if you do what is right, will you not be accepted?
Our sermon notes describe righteousness as what is approved in God’s eyes. That gives us a powerful way to evaluate our lives. We can spend enormous energy chasing applause, recognition, success, or validation while neglecting the approval that matters most.
There is freedom in settling this issue: if God is pleased, I do not have to live enslaved to everyone else’s opinion. Happiness rooted in God’s favor is steadier than happiness rooted in circumstances.
- Whose approval has had too much power over me?
- Is there an area where I already know what is right but have delayed doing it?
- What choice today would reflect a sincere desire to please God?
Lord, free me from living for the approval of people. Search my heart and show me anything that is out of alignment with You. Give me courage to do what is right and joy in knowing that Your favor is enough. Amen.
Choose obedience in one area where you have been tempted to compromise.
ONLY GOD CAN TRULY SATISFY
The promise of Matthew 5:6 moves from emptiness to fullness. The Greek idea behind “filled” paints a picture of being fed and satisfied — a need fully met. God does not merely distract us from our hunger; He meets us at the deepest level.
Psalm 107 says He satisfies the thirsty and fills the hungry with good things. Jesus takes the picture even further: “I am the bread of life.” The answer is not simply that God gives us good things. The greatest gift is that He gives us Himself.
Money, possessions, career success, and relationships can be gifts, but they make poor gods. When we ask created things to carry the weight of our identity and fulfillment, we eventually discover their limits. Our confidence and our boast must remain in God.
- What “good thing” have I been tempted to treat as an ultimate thing?
- Where am I experiencing emptiness that I have tried to fill without God?
- How has God already shown His goodness and faithfulness in my life?
Jesus, You are the Bread of Life. Forgive me for expecting temporary things to satisfy eternal needs. Teach me to receive Your goodness without replacing You with Your gifts. Be my confidence, my portion, and my satisfaction. Amen.
Write down three ways God has been good to you, and thank Him specifically for each one.
HE KNOWS WHAT YOU REALLY NEED
At the well in Samaria, Jesus spoke to a woman who initially understood His offer of living water in physical terms. She wanted water that would keep her from returning to the well. But Jesus could see beneath her immediate response and into the deeper story of her life.
That is still what Jesus does. We may think the answer is more money, a bigger house, a better career, or a different relationship. Those desires can feel urgent, but Jesus knows us more deeply than we know ourselves. He can identify the thirst beneath the thirst.
His conversation with the woman was not meant to humiliate her. It exposed the places where she had been searching so that He could offer what no human relationship or circumstance could provide: living water and everlasting life.
- What do I keep telling myself I “need” in order to be happy?
- What deeper longing might be underneath that desire?
- Am I willing to let Jesus speak honestly into the parts of my story I usually protect?
Jesus, You know me completely. You see beyond my words, my habits, and my surface desires. Show me what I am truly thirsty for. Meet me in the places I have tried to hide or satisfy on my own, and let Your living water become a fountain within me. Amen.
Spend ten quiet minutes with Jesus today without asking for anything – simply invite Him to search your heart.
SPIRIT AND TRUTH
Jesus’ conversation at the well eventually moved from thirst to worship. He revealed that the Father is seeking true worshipers – people who worship in spirit and truth.
Truth requires honesty. Intimacy with God grows when we stop performing and become genuine before Him. Our sermon notes emphasize that what is true is authentic and real, not counterfeit. God is not looking for a polished version of us that knows how to appear spiritual. He desires hearts yielded to Him.
Hunger for righteousness and authentic worship belong together. As the Holy Spirit leads us into the truth of who Jesus is, we can surrender more completely. The blessed life is not found outside God’s approval; it is found in a life that is increasingly real, yielded, and alive in Him.
- Where am I tempted to perform spiritually instead of being honest with God?
- What truth about Jesus do I need to embrace more fully?
- What would complete surrender look like in this season of my life?
Father, make me an authentic worshiper. Holy Spirit, guide me into truth and expose anything false in me. Jesus, I yield my life to You again. Let my worship be more than words; let it become the honest offering of my whole life. Amen.
End these five days by writing a one-paragraph surrender to God. Name what you are giving Him and what you are trusting Him to fill.
